Terrebonne hires Tyler Lewis as new head football coach

Terrebonne has hired Tyler Lewis as its next football coach, athletics director Scott Gauthreaux confirmed Tuesday morning.

Lewis, 30, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at St. James High School. He has worked as an assistant coach at Terrebonne under former coach Gary Hill, who parted ways with Terrebonne after 15 seasons in December.

Lewis, a former West St. John football player and 2009 graduate, will be the first Black head football coach at Terrebonne. He will also lead the boys track program.

“I’m blessed and humbled to even be considered for this position,” said Lewis, who won two LHSAA state football championships as a player and assistant coach at West St. John. “I worked as an assistant for Coach Hill. I was grateful for the opportunity he gave me when I was at Terrebonne. I’m ready to hit the ground running. I’m just super excited.”

Gauthreaux said he looks forward to seeing where Lewis will lead the program.

“I don’t have a lot of working knowledge about Tyler Lewis personally, but everything that I have heard of him is very positive,” Gauthreaux said. “After having the opportunity to sit down with him (Monday), I know he has a plan and a vision of where and how he would like to lead the program. He has a contagious, energetic personality that will attract athletes to the program. We are excited about the culture he will bring to our football and track programs.”

Lewis will try to fix a program that has been affected by COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida in the last two years. The Tigers had a 3-3 record in 2020 followed by a 1-6 mark in 2021.

“We’re going to build it from the ground up,” Lewis said. “We’re going to have that competitive edge. Our kids are going to compete at everything we do. I’m going to bring that competitive nature not only on the field but in the classroom. We want that winning mentality. We’re going to start with the basics and bring something different at Terrebonne. Things are going to be very exciting.”

Lewis said his past experiences at Terrebonne will help him as the new coach. He is a former coach at Houma Junior High, which is a feeder school for Terrebonne. He plans to work with the middle school and youth programs. He has also worked at West Thibodaux Middle.

“I’m ready for the challenge,” Lewis said. “I think the community is going to be excited about what is going to take place. I’m excited to work with the staff we’ll put together. Terrebonne will be one of the premier programs. It’s going to take some time but we’re going to take it one brick at a time and build a foundation.”
