Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard has MTSU jersey No. 20 retired

Kevin Byard returned to Middle Tennessee State's Floyd Stadium Friday night where his jersey No. 20 was retired

A ceremony took place at halftime of the Blue Raiders game against Texas-San Antonio. Titans general manager Jon Robinson attended the ceremony and voice of the Titan Mike Keith announced it.

Byard became only the second player on program history to have his number retired joining Teddy Morris (jersey No. 14, 1962-65).

"At MTSU I just wanted to be the best player that I could be," Byard said.

"I wanted to make an imprint on the community and obviously the team and it turned out great. I'm getting my jersey retired and I want to say it's sunk it but doesn't really feel like it has to be the only player in school history to get a jersey retired. I'm still in the NFL; it's not like I'm an old guy or nothing like that. It's pretty surreal."

Byard was named a permanent team captain during his time at MTSU (2011-15).

He ranks first in MTSU career interceptions (19), interception return yards (377), interception return touchdowns (4) and sixth in total tackles (312).
