Teens will learn what it’s like to be a sheriff’s deputy during free citizen’s academy
Next month, teenagers in Nassau County will get a chance to see firsthand what it’s like to be a sheriff’s deputy.
It’s all part of a free program called the Sheriff’s Teen Citizen’s Academy.

“We wanted to ramp it up and make it as interesting as we could,” said Sergeant Brian Blackwell, who has been with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office for the past 13 years.
These deputies want teens to have a fun outlet to learn, and maybe even make a difference as a deputy themselves one day.
“We’re taking the kids and putting them through a crime scene, start to finish,” Blackwell said as he described one of the activities. “Here, they get to see every entity of the sheriff’s office. They get to meet, greet, talk to everyone in the division. [It’s] very hands-on, very in-your-face. They get to see it live and not just kinda hear about it,” he emphasized.

“Everything we can do to spread joy and positivity to these kids,” Blackwell said. “That’s our goal.”
Teens ages 14 to 18 can sign up for the three-day summer program by Friday, July 1. To apply, call 904-548-4020 or email ni1468@nassauso.com.
A notary signature is required for the application. The classes are scheduled from July 27-29, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and meals will be provided.
