Teenager comes out to her mom through TikTok dance trend: ‘It took a lot of courage’

A teenager is going viral after sharing the creative way she chose to come out as bisexual to her mom.

The young woman, who goes by the username tesslaanselme on TikTok, posted the clip with the caption, “I came out to my mom.” In the video, the TikToker reveals that she shared that information by dancing to a remix of “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion.

Tesslaanselme’s mom is standing in the background of the clip, watching her daughter dance to the track, which has been altered to include lyrics about bisexuality.

As the teen dances, her mom stands in the background with her arms crossed. It’s originally unclear to judge the woman’s reaction, but thankfully, tesslaanselme followed up in her video’s comments with more details.

The TikToker wrote that her mom was supportive of the announcement, adding that she had a suspicion it was coming.

“She said she loves me and supports me and then she said when are you telling dad which I never did lol,” the teen wrote.

Tesslaanselme also admitted in the comments that she was extremely nervous to reveal her sexual identify in such a public way.

“Just do it,” she told another commenter who was thinking of coming out to their parents. “It took me a lot of courage and you can see my face getting redder but once you do it will be this weight lifted off your shoulders ok.”

That courage drew plenty of praise too. The video has since received nearly 300,000 views and hundreds of supportive comments.

“I’m proud of you for doing that I hope she supports you,” one user wrote.

“Wish I could be that brave,” another added.

Tesslaanselme’s viral video is part of a larger TikTok trend in which bisexual users are dancing to the same audio as a way of coming out to their friends, family members and even their partners. According to TikTok, the “Savage” remix has been used in more than 44,000 videos.
