A teenager was killed and a man was critically injured after a minor crash led to an exchange of gunfire early Saturday morning in Laveen, officials said.

Officers responded to a shooting call just before 3:30 a.m. near 43rd Avenue and Vineyard Road, Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Andy Williams said.

A man with a gunshot wound was found and taken to a hospital in critical condition. A teenager was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead by the Phoenix Fire Department, Williams said.

Preliminary information suggests that the pair exchanged gunfire after a minor vehicle crash, Williams said.

Officers remained at the scene as of 8 a.m. on Saturday speaking to witnesses and searching for evidence of what led up to the shooting. The area was expected to be restricted for "some time," Williams said.

No further details were immediately available.
