Strong finish propels Kansas past Lady Raiders
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas guards Chandler Prater and Holly Kiersgieter scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, and the Jayhawks turned back Texas Tech 71-57 Saturday in Big 12 women's basketball.
Kansas (12-4, 3-3) weathered a 32-point performance by Tech forward Vivian Gray to snap a two-game losing streak. Tech (9-9, 2-5) has lost two in a row and four of its past five.
Gray's 32 points were a season high for the senior forward from Argyle. She scored 38 against Kansas last year in a game at United Supermarkets Arena.
Gray pulled Tech within 54-49 on a layup with 7:39 left, but Kansas made a 15-3 run over the next seven minutes during which five Jayhawks scored.
Ioanna Chatzileonti added 11 points for Kansas.
Gray finished 10 of 22 from the field and made 12 of 16 free throws. Rhyle McKinney was the Lady Raiders' next highest scorer with seven points. Khadija Faye and Taylah Thomas gathered nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Lady Raiders took their last lead on a Bryn Gerlich basket in the first minute of the second half. That made it 35-34, but the Jayhawks responded with an 8-0 run in which Aniya Thomas scored four points.
Kansas pushed the lead to 11 points twice late in the third quarter on baskets by Prater and Kiersgieter, the last making the score 54-43 as the period ended.
