TDOT worker killed on Memphis interstate identified

A man who worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation died after being hit by a vehicle on I-55, according to TDOT.

Memphis Police said the crash happened around 1 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-55 near I-240.

TDOT identified the man as Trent Johnston, a supervisor for TDOT Bridge Inspection. Johnston had been with TDOT since 2015.

When authorities arrived, Johnston was already dead, police said.

The crash shut down northbound traffic on I-55 at the Brooks Road exit.

TDOT released a statement, saying, “We are mourning the loss of a TDOT worker killed today on I-55 in Memphis. The employee was inspecting the bridge when an oncoming vehicle hit him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Out of respect for them, we have no more details to share at this time.”

Johnston was buried on October 7, 2022. TDOT said Johnston’s death was the first TDOT fatality since 2016 and that he was the 113th overall person killed in the line of duty with TDOT.
