TBI: Shelby Co. deputies shoot man after he hit one with his car in Cordova

Two Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputies shot a man after he hit one of the deputies with his vehicle Monday night in Cordova, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.

The deputies responded to a disturbance call in the 9200 block of Durhamshire Drive around 9 p.m. when they encountered the man, TBI said. The man ran over one of the deputies with his car, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said in a tweet. Both deputies then shot into the car, according to TBI.

The man was taken to Region One Health in critical condition, according to SCSO. Both deputies were hospitalized with non-critical injuries, TBI said, and a SCSO spokesperson told the Commercial Appeal both officers have been released from the hospital.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as 23-year-old Charlie Gibson. He remained in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gibson has a criminal record, including charges for theft, felony possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, and aggravated assault.

He spent five years in prison before being released in October 2020, however many of the records are spotty.

TBI is investigating the shooting at the request of Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich. TBI will submit findings to the DA, who will review the officers' actions.
