Taco Flats opens in Northwest Austin; Lakeway gets location in September

Legacy taco brand Taco Flats is doubling its number of Austin-area locations. The restaurant, which Simon Madera rebooted in 2014, will open a location Friday in the old Riata Bar and Grill space in Northwest Austin (12221 Riata Trace Parkway, Suite 100), and in mid-September, the mini-chain will open in Lakeway in the former Castro’s Bar & BBQ space at 900 FM 620, Suite C104. The new locations will serve the same menus of about 20 tacos and 10 cocktails found at the existing restaurant locations.

Madera rebooted the Taco Flats brand, which became legendary in Austin under founder Hector Alvarado and later owners Linda and Carl Steele, and moved it to Burnet Road in 2014. He opened a second location in the former Zocalo Cafe space in Clarksville in 2019. The brand is also represented at The Pitch on Parmer and at Q2 Stadium. Madera also operates mezcal bar La Holly in East Austin and Smithville bar and smoked meat taco concept Carne Lenta.
