THURSDAY

Girls Soccer

Fort Myers 3, Bishop Verot 1: The youth of the Fort Myers girls soccer team was something coach Brian Buesing was optimistic about at the beginning of the season. That was put on display in one of the bigger moments of Wednesday night’s contest against a rival in Bishop Verot.

Junior Kailani Casazza put away a ball inside the 18-yard box to give Fort Myers (4-1-2) a rivalry win over the Vikings, winning 3-1. Casazza’s game-winner came in the 55th minute, with the game tied 1-1.

“We just had to go and attack them because they’re super-fast and strong,” Casazza said. “We came out with a win, so I guess we’re faster and stronger.

“We just kept the underdog mentality, and didn’t want to get too cocky when we’re up. I think that’s how we came out with a win.”

The Green Wave controlled much of the first 40 minutes, but it was Verot that got on the board first. The Vikings pushed on a counterattack, held possession in the Fort Myers defensive zone for close to a minute, and Ava Irion put away a cross to open the scoring in the 39th minute. That was Irion’s first goal of the season.

It wouldn’t take long for Fort Myers to come back and tie the game, as Giana D’Altrui was fouled inside the 18-yard box. Morgan McCarty beat Lily Murnane on a penalty kick to the right side to regain the momentum right before the halftime whistle blew. Karlee Schmid added a third goal in the 73rd minute, assisted by Ava Torres.

“We knew from the beginning that if we didn’t come out strong, we were gonna get bit in the butt for it,” McCarty said. “Once the goal happened, it set in and we picked it up, started focusing, and working on our touches. I think once we started connecting our passes a bit more, that’s when things started to pick up.”

Fort Myers will look to continue the momentum on a three-game win streak, taking on Ida Baker and Barron Collier next week before heading into the new year. Bishop Verot (2-3-1) has three games to get back to or above .500, taking on Lely, Bonita Springs, and Naples.

Estero 3, Cape Coral 2: Ansley Mancini scored a hat trick to seal the win against the Seahawks 3-2. Kaitlyn Mancini, Hannah Weaver, and Emma Burkett added assists.

Oasis 9, SFCA 1: Senior Ariana Suarez had a career-high five goals for the Sharks. Jaclynn Mars, Maddison Davis, and Alyssa Neuhausel all contributed goals. Nevaeh Rogers lead the way in assists with 3, followed by 2 from Erin Vezzola, and 1 each from Jazlyn Forbes, Ashley Lynn, and Mallory Morano. Elizabeth Ali made 5 saves.

Boys Soccer

Fort Myers 3, Bishop Verot 0: The Fort Myers boys soccer took a while to break through, but the Green Wave added key insurance goals in the second half. Thanks to a pair of goals three minutes apart in the final 40 minutes, Fort Myers won 3-0 to cap off a doubleheader sweep of Bishop Verot at Edison Stadium on Wednesday.

Gabriel Da Rocha got Fort Myers on the board first, in the 30th minute on a shot from close to 30 yards out. Ricardo Louis joined the party in the 67th minute, followed by a Pierre Jean-Philippe goal in the 70th minute to close the door on any Verot comeback.

“Tonight is a little better than how we’ve been playing lately,” Fort Myers coach Chris Reid said. “We’ve been struggling lately, scoring goals. We have, in my opinion, the best forward in the state, and we can’t score goals. That’s not something that we should be doing. We’ve been working on finishing. That’s all we’ve been doing the last couple of practices. We scored three tonight, and we came to play.”

Getting Louis involved was something that Reid has been looking to do as of late. Louis came on strong at the end of 2021-22, netting seven goals in the postseason.

“This group is a veteran group,” Reid added. “We have 15 seniors. And before the season started, all they’ve been talking about is states because they missed it by a PK last year. They’re hungry, it’s just taking them a little while to get going. Once they get going, I have no doubt they’re going to roll.”

Scoring a shutout was big for Fort Myers, but the momentum it carries going into Friday night’s clash against Barron Collier is critical. The Cougars are 6-1-1, and firing on all cylinders under the direction of John Damasco. The Greenies have notched back-to-back shutouts, their first two of the year.

“If we start playing a lot more combination, look for the easy pass, give and go’s, give and go’s, I think that’s the biggest thing for our team right now,” Reid said of a key heading into Barron Collier.
