Girls Wrestling

Led by two individual champions, Fort Myers captured the Class 1A-District 12 championship for the second year in a row over Riverdale and Palmetto Ridge, who tied for second.

One of the fiercest matches of the night came early, as First Baptist’s Hailee Moder grappled Tatiana Soto of Riverdale at 115 pounds. The two girls waged a back-and-forth battle with an exhausted Moder pinning Soto late in the third round.

“I didn’t have any energy, Soto is very good. I’m surprised I beat her,” said Moder.

The following match Priscilla Figueirdedo led the Fort Myers charge making quick work with a pin of Lely’s Shumarah Pierre early in the first round.

The nailbiter match came at 130 pounds when a weary Sofia Carballeda of Gulf Coast caught Lainey Hooper of Bishop Verot by surprise with a reversal in the last minute to win 10-8.

“We make sure we can last all three periods and that came in really handy today,” said Carballeda.

The clincher for Fort Myers came at 170 pounds when Daphney Pierre made quick work of Jamine Toomer of Palmetto Ridge with a first period pin.

“This is a stress release, I have a lot of stress in my life and this allows me to get the stress out,” said Pierre.

Fort Myers coach Ashley Stowell savored the team title, but won’t dwell on it with regional play coming next week.

“To quote the Ted Lasso show; ‘you’ve got to be a goldfish.’ You’ve got to move on good or bad and every match is a new match and you never know what can happen,” said Stowell.

Naples athletes honored with Signing Day ceremony

Seven Naples High athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements Wednesday morning with a signing ceremony.

Four football players signed with colleges, headlined by Jean Tanelus (Virginia University-Lynchburg), Debonair Brown (Lake Erie College), Thompson Defhommes (Presbyterian), and Keylijah Williams (Bryant).

Brown and Tanelus were both All-Area First Team selections by the Naples Daily News after being No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in tackles in 2022. The two combined for 270 tackles (14 for loss), six sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception.

Defhommes, a Second Team selection, posted 48 tackles (4 for loss), while adding an interception. He had three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles for a Naples defense that allowed fewer than 11 points per game. As a wide receiver in Naples' offense, Williams didn't get many chances to catch the ball, but led the team with 153 receiving yards on seven receptions with three touchdowns.

Lynch heads to Flagler after running a leg on the 4x800 and 4x400 teams a season ago in track and field, helping the Golden Eagles finish 4th and 8th, respectively at the Class 3A State Championships.

Pearl, a catcher on the Naples baseball team, played in 16 games last year and finished with a .966 fielding percentage behind the dish on 59 total chances.

McKernan is the lone signee headed to a Power Five program, and will be on the Clemson Rowing team.
