Sutton, Jaguars hand Wave third-straight loss

Oct. 16—MADISON — Madison Central can be a passing team when it needs to be.

Vic Sutton threw for a career-high 241 yards and three touchdowns as the Jaguars hammered Tupelo 35-3 in a Division 2-6A game on Friday night.

This was just the second time all season that Madison Central (6-1, 3-1) had more passing yards than rushing yards. In fact, entering the game, the offense had more than twice as much rushing as passing yardage.

"The last three or four weeks people have been playing us zero coverage, and we told (Sutton) from the get-go, if they're going to play us zero, you've got to make some throws," Madison Central coach Toby Collums said.

Sutton first burned a normally solid Tupelo secondary late in the first quarter when he found Isaiah Spencer for a 51-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead.

Spencer then had a 10-yard TD catch 44 seconds before halftime to give the Jags a 14-3 lead.

Sutton's arm continued to do damage in the third. His 34-yard completion to Spencer set up a 1-yard TD run by Robert Dumas.

And then Sutton hit Joseph Nichols from 33 yards for a 28-3 lead with 3:19 left in the third.

Spencer finished with six catches for 130 yards.

"He is special," Sutton said. "He's been my boy since Day 1. He brings the fire to the offense."

Tupelo (5-3, 1-3) couldn't respond offensively. The Golden Wave finished with 142 total yards.

It was the third-straight loss for Tupelo, which is now in danger of missing the playoffs with three games left in the regular season.

"We let some circumstances get to us, and we weren't tough tonight," Tupelo coach Ty Hardin said. "It's embarrassing. Worst loss I've ever had in my career probably."

Extra Points

Turning Point: The Jaguars opened the second half with a six-play, 74-yard touchdown drive to make it 21-3.

Point Man: Sutton completed 14 of 21 passes.

Talking Point: "He's got great arm talent, and he's a good athlete. He can make every throw on the field." — Collums, on Sutton
