Suspected drug driver questioned after boy, 8, killed in M60 crash

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after an eight-year-old boy was killed in a motorway crash on Friday.

Another boy, 6, was said to have been seriously hurt as the BMW being driven by the suspect collided with a stationary highway maintenance vehicle on the hard shoulder on Friday.

Both boys, passengers in the suspect’s car, were taken to hospital in Manchester soon after the crash, but the eight-year-old was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A woman in the stationary vehicle received minor injuries, North West Ambulance Service confirmed.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.

Two air ambulances, three road ambulances, fire crews and officers from GMP were called to the crash shortly before 2pm on Friday afternoon.

Large sections of the motorway were also closed following the incident, causing long tailbacks around Manchester.

Police have appealed for drivers to exercise caution in wet conditions since the crash happened during heavy rain.

Sergeant Matthew Picton of Greater Manchester Police's roads policing unit said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy's family at this terrible time.

"Our officers are currently piecing together the circumstances of the collision and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed it, or who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch as a matter of urgency."
