Madison, who was found competent to stand trial during a September hearing, pleaded not guilty Monday, which allows him to take his case to trial. Madison will be in court next for a pre-trial conference.

Lopez, speaking by way of interpreter, told Ottawa County Circuit Judge Karen Miedema that he became upset upon “seeing her with her new boyfriend holding his son.”

“He’s extremely remorseful for what happened in that moment,” Lopez’s attorney, Jordan Vahdat, said, adding there are “immigration issues at play” for Lopez because of the charge.

Vahdat described Lopez as an “avid fisherman” and an “active participant in his child’s life and nieces’ and nephews’ (lives).”

“So he’s going to pay for this,” Vahdat said.
