Suspect charged with reckless homicide after dispute ends in fatal shooting

A 24-year-old man who was shot in the Lonsdale neighborhood early Friday morning has died, and a suspect has been charged with reckless homicide and domestic assault.

The victim, John Mack of Knoxville, was taken to the hospital but died late Friday afternoon, a Knoxville police spokesperson said.

At about 12:30 a.m. Friday, Knoxville police officers responded to the 1900 block of Minnesota Avenue for a report of a shooting, the spokesman said in a press release.

A second man was found nearby suffering from a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound and identified as 24-year-old Roshaun Smith, the primary suspect.

Smith, who was carrying a handgun, had gotten into an argument with a third person, whom he was threatening, police say. Smith raised the gun in the air and fired a shot, which struck Mack in the side of the head, court records said. No information was available on how Smith was shot.

Both men were taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Smith was released from the hospital Sunday morning and taken into custody on reckless homicide and domestic assault charges. He remains in custody and no bond has been set.
