Superintendent, police warn of Snapchat hacking in Manchester

Mar. 5—MANCHESTER — The Police Department is investigating reports from local students that their Snapchat accounts were hacked by an individual who requested explicit photos to return the account.

According to an email sent to students' families Thursday by Superintendent Matthew Geary, the accounts have been hacked by an individual who pretends to be a friend or family member and asks for the account's password.

Once the individual has access to the account, they have then requested the student send them explicit photographs to return the account, according to Geary.

Even if the student hasn't sent any photos, the individual has access to all of the other photos on the students' accounts, Geary wrote.

To protect oneself, never give out account passwords to anyone, even if it's someone trusted, Geary suggested.

Police Lt. Ryan Shea confirmed this morning that there are detectives looking into the situation and the investigation is ongoing.

Shea didn't know when the department began its investigation, but said it started prior to Geary's email. Shea said there are two open cases at this time.
