Summit Tourney roundup: Strong shooting carries Coyote women to victory

Mar. 7—SIOUX FALLS — The South Dakota Coyote women's basketball team scored at least 20 points in every quarter and cruised to an 89-66 opening-round win at the Summit League tournament over Oral Roberts.

Chloe Lamb scored 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting, while teammates Liv Korngable and Hannah Sjerven were also both efficient offensively in the win for USD (17-5). Korngable was 8 of 12 shooting in a 19-point effort, while Sjerven scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds on 6 of 10 shooting. Korngable also had six assists and six steals, and the Coyotes were 16 of 18 at the free-throw line.

Oral Roberts (6-15) made 11 3-pointers but was held to 36 percent shooting overall. Conference freshman of the year Tierney Coleman scored 21 points to pace the Golden Eagles.

Coleman had a pair of free throws to trim the Coyote lead to nine points with 6:33 remaining before the Coyotes scored the next 15 points in a row to extend the lead to 24 points, putting it out of reach late.

USD plays the winner of North Dakota State and Denver in the second semifinal at 2:45 p.m. on Monday.

South Dakota State men pull away from Omaha

SIOUX FALLS — A big effort from South Dakota State's Douglas Wilson helped the No. 1-seeded Jackrabbit men's basketball team knock off Omaha in the quarterfinals of the Summit League tournament in a 84-71 victory at the Sanford Pentagon.

Wilson scored 25 points, while Baylor Scheierman had 18 points, and each had seven assists, helping the Jackrabbits make 53 percent of their shots. Scheierman had 13 rebounds in the victory.

Getting through the first round can be considered a success for the Jackrabbits who were upset as the No. 1 seed in 2019 in the first round and knocked out as the No. 2 seed in the 2020 competition.

With seven points late in the first half from Wilson, SDSU had an 11-2 run to build a 40-31 halftime lead. SDSU would lead by as many as 18 points in the second half but the Mavericks could never threaten in the second half.

For Omaha (5-20), Ayo Akinwole scored a game-high 26 points in the game, while Jadin Booth scored 13 points and Kyle Luedtke scored 10.

SDSU (16-6) will take on either Oral Roberts or North Dakota in the tournament semifinals at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
