A summer of reporting uplifts voices from vibrant Joseph Avenue

Three Democrat and Chronicle Revisiting the Rochester Narrative fellows have spent the summer of 2022 engaging, and reporting with Rochester residents who live on, around or remain somehow connected to Joseph Avenue.

Their project goals included addressing the harm that the legacy media has caused in parts of Rochester through underrepresenting Black voices and experience, shining a light on the creative talent and energy working in the area, and an intention to leave the community with something positive for today, and the future.

The outcome of their journalism, produced in collaboration with The Avenue Blackbox Theatre, is compiled here.

“Without education, what are we?” said Ma’Niyah Carter during a Peace walk in the Maplewood district on the anniversary of the 1964 uprising in Rochester. Carter hopes to see more people of color in high-profile roles and being highlighted for what they contribute to the world.

“You know what is the best thing about this, being in the business for a long time? Is that you see kids that are little and they come back and they got their kids and some of them even have grandkids already. It’s wow. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it,” longtime Joseph Ave. business owner Jaime Rivera said.
