Study: Raleigh has one of nation’s highest percentages of female real estate agents

In residential real estate, a field dominated by women nationwide, Raleigh still stands out.

Nearly 64% of the real estate agents in Raleigh are female, the ninth highest percentage among large metropolitan areas nationwide, according to a new study by Construction Coverage.

The state as a whole ranks lower than the national average, however, with women accounting for less than 53% of all North Carolina real estate agents, the study found.

According to the most recent data from the Census Bureau, collected in 2020, women account for 56% of all real estate agents in the U.S.

Construction Coverage analyzed data from the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and online real estate marketplace Zillow.

Across the nation, four in 10 female real estate agents work part time, they found, while less than 27% of men are part-time in the profession.

“Because the real estate profession offers high earnings potential, flexible schedules for families, and a low barrier to entry, it attracts a large number of women who are looking for a career change, a second job, or coming back to the workforce after a career break,” study author Jonathan Jones wrote.

Here are the 10 cities with the highest percentages of female real estate agents:

1. Rochester, New York: 81.5%

2. Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin, South Carolina: 70.5%

3. Louisville, Kentucky, and Jefferson County, Indiana: 69.8%

4. Columbus, Ohio: 69.7%

5. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: 69.3%

6. New Orleans-Metairie, Louisiana: 67.5%

7. Providence-Warwick, Rhode Island: 65.4%

8. Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada: 65.3%

9. Raleigh, North Carolina: 63.7%

10. Tucson, Arizona: 63.2%

The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area rings in at No. 40, with 50.9% of its real estate agents identifying as female.
