Student to attend medical congress

Jun. 23—ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sophie Earp, a 10th grade student at Albuquerque School of Excellence, has been selected to represent New Mexico at the two-day National Congress of Future Medical Leaders taking place Saturday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The congress is an honors-only program for high school students pursuing medical or medical research degrees with a goal of honoring, inspiring and motivating top students, organizers said in a news release.

Earp's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in medicine and the science director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. She was selected based on her academics, leadership potential and commitment to serving humanity in medicine, according to the release.

The event features Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science winners talking about leading medical research, top medical school deans speaking on what to expect in medical school, stories of patients who are living medical miracles, and learning about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.

The Academy also offers free services and programs to students who want to become physicians or go into medical science.
