What to stream this weekend: Netflix's 'The Woman in the Window,' 'Those Who Wish Me Dead'

Movie theaters are slowly reopening for the summer season, but new streaming films are still coming home to entertain you and your family during socially distanced times.

This weekend is headlined by two A-list actresses: Amy Adams stars as an agoraphobic New Yorker who witnesses a murder (or does she?) in a Netflix mystery thriller while Angelina Jolie is a Montana smokejumper protecting a boy from assassins and an out-of-control wildfire in an HBO Max survival flick.

If you're planning to return to your local theater, "Spiral: From the Book of Saw" stars Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson as crusading cops in the ninth installment of the gory horror franchise, and the thriller "Profile," which takes place entirely over a computer screen, follows an undercover British journalist (Valene Kane) using social media to try and expose a terrorist recruiter (Shazad Latif).

But if you'd rather stick closer to home, here's a rundown of new movies hitting streaming and on-demand platforms this weekend, for every cinematic taste:

If you're feeling stuck at home: 'The Woman in the Window'

The flimsy adaptation of A.J. Finn's mystery thriller casts Adams as an agoraphobic child psychologist who refuses to leave her house and instead double-fists wine and meds to a medically questionable degree. Bigger problems arise when she witnesses the murder of a neighbor, quickly gets gaslit about what she saw and sobers up enough to do her own investigation in a movie that doesn't nearly do justice to its twisty source material or old-school film influences.

If you're an Angelina Jolie completist: 'Those Who Wish Me Dead'

In Taylor Sheridan's wilderness thriller, Jolie plays a troubled smokejumper with PTSD from a tragic past mission who has to keep a 12-year-old boy (Finn Little) safe from killers. But she should have used the emergency exit to escape this flaming pile of mediocrity that, while looking swell in terms of nature imagery, features a hackneyed, far-fetched narrative plus Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult as persnickety hitmen.

If you dig ultra-tense relationship dramas: 'The Killing of Two Lovers'

The emotionally taxing (in a good way) indie film stars Clayne Crawford as small-town handyman David, who's separated from wife Nikki (Sepideh Moafi), living down the street with his ailing father, and trying to keep his family together. The couple agrees to see other people, but when Nikki dates someone new (Chris Coy), the usually calm David's fury begins to bubble up leading to a heated yet surprising conclusion.

Ezra Dewey stars as a mute 12-year-old grieving the loss of his mother, discovers a book of magic spells, performs a ritual to finally have a voice, and unleashes a sinister spirit in the horror film "The Djinn."

If you're wishing for a good horror flick: 'The Djinn'

The freaky modern-day fable centers on a mute 12-year-old boy (Ezra Dewey) who, following his mom's death and a move to a new apartment, finds the Book of Shadows in a closet and discovers a ritual that will bestow one's greatest desire: in his case, a voice. But the spell comes with consequences, unleashing a soul-collecting monster that takes familiar form and a story more emotionally affecting than your average chiller.

If you miss partying hearty with randos: 'The Get Together'

A bustling Austin, Texas, shindig with colorful personalities is the setting for the comedy with a few interweaving storylines featuring an awkward rideshare driver (Courtney Parchman), a returning Texan (Johanna Braddy) and her nerve-wracked boyfriend (Jacob Artist) and a lovelorn musician (Alejandro Rose-Garcia). The high concept doesn't totally stick the landing but it's good for a few amusing moments and kooky characters.

If you want to head for the land down under: 'High Ground'

In 1930s Australia, a young aboriginal man named Gutjuk (Jacob Junior Nayinggul) who wants to save the last of his family is forced to track down his uncle, a fearsome warrior causing trouble in the outback. He teams up with Travis (Simon Baker), an ex-sniper whose path has crossed Gutjuk's before, and creates a bond in an interesting historical adventure that tackles colonization and the treatment of indigenous peoples.

If you don't mind a little claustrophobia: 'Oxygen'

French actress Mélanie Laurent ("Inglourious Basterds") gets a showcase in Alexandre Aja's survival thriller as a woman who wakes up in a cryogenic pod not knowing who she is or why she only has 32% of her oxygen supply left. She has to stave off panic attacks as well as deal with an obtuse computer in trying to find out what's happening, and a variation on a familiar confined theme brings a flurry of twists and an immersive narrative.
