Stratford bicyclist fatally struck on deadly stretch of Burlco highway

CHESTERFIELD - A Camden County woman was fatally injured while bicycling on a deadly stretch of highway here.

Julie Galezniak, 62, of Stratford was riding with a group of cyclists on Sykesville Road when the collision occurred around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, said the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

It was the second fatal collision on Sykesville Road in recent weeks, authorities said.

Galezniak was pedaling southbound when she was hit by a pickup truck going the same direction. The former Stratford councilwoman died after being flown to an area hospital.

Kevin Sparkman, a Medford man who said he often rode in groups with Galezniak, described the Stratford woman as "a very strong, experienced and safe rider."

"She was a triathlete and tough to keep up with on many rides (at least for me)," Sparkman wrote in a Facebook post.

A family obituary notes Galezniak's survivors include her husband, two children "and her beloved dog, Sonny."

An investigation is continuing into the incident, the prosecutor's office said Monday.

It did not release the name of the motorist, who remained at the scene. The prosecutor's office noted no traffic summons have been issued and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

"This is the second fatality recently along the same stretch of Sykesville Road," the prosecutor's office said.

It noted a Chesterfield woman, 71-year-old Mary Broderick, was fatally struck by a vehicle on Oct. 20.

The motorist in that accident, Valentina Golya, 86, of Chesterfield, was issued a summons for careless driving.
