Strangers who met through accidental text to spend fourth Thanksgiving together

A grandmother who accidentally texted a teenager an invitation to Thanksgiving in 2016 will spend yet another holiday with Jamal Hinton and his family, he confirmed on Twitter.

The tradition started when Wanda Dench, now 62, thought she was texting her grandson to invite him to Thanksgiving at her house. She was really texting Hinton, now 20.

Dench, who is from Mesa, Ariz., texted Hinton with the details for the Thanksgiving to dinner she was hosting at her house. When Hinton didn't recognize the phone number, he asked her for a photo to confirm it was his grandma. The picture he received wasn't Hinton's grandma, but it didn't stop him from accepting the invitation.

"Can I still get a plate, though?" Hinton asked.

Dench replied, "Of course you can. That's what grandmas do ... feed everyone."

Hinton, who is from Phoenix, Ariz., posted the text exchange on Twitter at the time, which quickly went viral.

Those paying attention to the saga unfold in 2016 were surprised to see that Dench and Hinton's families really did share Thanksgiving together that year and the following three years.

This year, the tradition will continue. Tomorrow, Hinton and his girlfriend are hosting the 62-year-old and her husband at their family’s celebration for the first time.

"Mikaela, his girlfriend, invited us over to her aunt's house for Thanksgiving, and I said yes before I even think she finished her sentence," Dench told TODAY. "So I am excited to go to her aunt's house and meet everybody and not have to cook."

For his part, Hinton said he is just excited to have her and that he feels great the tradition is living on.

"[Dench] is a really good person," Hinton told Good Morning America. "I really enjoy the time I spend with her."
