Storm brings needed rain, but little drought relief to Lubbock

Much of Lubbock saw at least some rainfall, including some in the form of heavy downpours, Tuesday as scattered thunderstorms popped up around the South Plains.

At Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, 0.09 of an inch of precipitation was recorded by early Tuesday evening, while the West Texas Mesonet showed measurements of several hundredths of an inch in southeast and northwest Lubbock.

Other parts of the city saw substantially more, with parts of southwest Lubbock seeing a heavy sustained downpour that flooded streets, and R.Q. Settler in the South Overton neighborhood reporting 0.20 of an inch between 4:50 and 5:20 p.m.

The official rainfall total at the airport puts the city at 0.18 of an inch of precipitation so far in August, with 5.07 inches so far this year. That's 6.33 inches below the year-to-date average of 11.4 inches, according to National Weather Service data.
