Stephen Smith taking over Ledyard softball program

Jan. 18—LEDYARD — Stephen Smith, the head softball coach at Windham Tech in 2021, will take over the same role at Ledyard High School, athletic director Jim Buonocore announced on Tuesday.

Smith replaces Brittany Robinson, who resigned after seven seasons. The Colonels went 18-4 in 2021, reaching the Class L semifinals before losing to St. Joseph.

Smith is familiar with the Eastern Connecticut Conference, currently serving as the girls' soccer coach at Windham. Prior to taking over at Windham Tech, he was an assistant at E.O. Smith from 2016-20. He also serves as head coach for the Elite Raiders travel softball team in Mansfield.

"Coach Smith brings a strong background and multiple coaching experiences to this very attractive head coaching position," Buonocore said in a release. "We have a veteran team returning this spring and I am confident that Coach Smith will be able to continue to not only keep our program competitive at the league and state level, but also help elevate our program to new heights.

"In speaking with many individuals who have worked with Coach Smith over the years, he is very knowledgeable in regard to the game of softball, is extremely conscientious and hardworking and most importantly, has a solid rapport with his student-athletes. Coaching is about relationships and building trust within your organization. I am confident Coach Smith will be able to do just that as he takes the reigns of the Ledyard softball program this spring."
