State wrestling roundup: Kernels go unbeaten in Class A placing matches

Feb. 28—RAPID CITY — Mitchell High School went 6-0 in consolation placement matchups in the Class A state tournament Saturday.

The Kernels scored three victories after trailing entering the third period and won two matches in overtime.

Senior Tyson Degen trailed Rapid City Stevens' Tyler Voorhees 4-2 entering the third period of the 160-pound third-place match, but recorded a reversal 48 seconds into the period and then ended the match with a takedown in overtime. Junior Joe Van Overschelde controlled Brandon Valley's Dominic Tucker from the start of the 182-pound third-place match, cruising to a 9-4 decision.

Wyatt Winter ended his high school career with a bang, pinning Huron's Tristan Cardona 2 minutes, 25 seconds into the 220-pound fifth-place match. Tucker Vilhauer trailed Milbank's Barrett Schneck 6-0 with less than a minute left in the 152-pound seventh-place match, only to record an escape, takedown and nearfall in the final minute. He then pinn Schneck 49 seconds into overtime.

Brock Sparks pinned Milbank's Brayden Christensen 1 minute, 25 seconds in the 132-pound seventh-place match, while Jagger Tyler earned a come-from-behind win over Dakota Valley's Jackson Boonstra by scoring five points in the last period of the 126-pound seventh-place match.

Chamberlain's Noah Hutmacher topped Milbank's Toby Schneck in a 7-0 decision to take third place at 195, while Canyon Burkard was pinned by Pierre's Preston Taylor 13 seconds into the 285-pound third-place match.

Winner Area scores four wins in Class B consolation bracket

Heading into the championship matches, Winner Area had four wrestlers pick up victories in the consolation bracket. The Warriors enter the final session in second place behind Canton by 25.5 points.

Kaleb Osborn defeated Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes' Kyler Konstanz, 1-0, to take third place at 120 pounds. Aaron Gilchrist narrowly topped KWLPG's Carter Lenz, 6-5, in the fifth-place match at 138 pounds, while Joey Cole pinned Wagner's Nolan Dvorak to take seventh at 182 pounds. Finally, Charley Pravecek notched fifth place at 195 pounds over Burke/Gregory's Taron Serr, 3-2.

Winner Area's Jack Kruger (160) ended his season in sixth place. Riley Orel fell to Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon's Isaac Crownover in the 152-pound fifth-place match.

Also at 152, Wessington Springs/Wolsey-Wessington/Woonsocket's Keegan Haider notched a 3-2 win over Howard's John Callies to place third at 152 pounds. The Tigers also had Ty Beyer (160) make the podium in seventh place.

At 126 pounds, BHSA's Brady Bierema defeated Parkston's Porter Neugebauer, 3-1, to claim third place.

Burke/Gregory's top finisher of the afternoon was Tucker Even, who took sixth at 170 pounds. It also had Rylan Peck (152) place eighth and Jordan Vosika (145) take seventh, as Vosika defeated Wagner's Riley Roberts, 8-4. Wagner's Bradyn Lhotak (138) notched third place, as well.

For McCook Central/Montrose, Trystan Traupel (106) and Weston Remmers (126) each earned seventh place. Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney's Cole Pranger (220) took third, Kellen Cassidy (285) placed fifth and Brandon Bosworth (138) finished in seventh, too. Marion/Freeman had a sixth-place finisher in Clayton Smith at 220 pounds.

Meanwhile, KWLPG had a slew of placers. Grayson Hanson (160) and Levi Nightingale (195) took third, Chase Varilek (132) finished in fifth and Iden Myers (113) and Holden Havlik (170) each earned eighth place.
