Stars victorious over Hot Dogs in wrestling

Dec. 2—DOVER — The Western Boone wrestling team got off to a strong start on Thursday evening when they faced Sagamore Conference foe Frankfort on Thursday night.

The Stars won nine of the 11 matches contested and cruised to a season-opening 60-18 win over the Hot Dogs.

"We had a good showing tonight," Western Boone head coach Wes Mikesell said. "Even the younger kids, they fought hard throughout. Even if we got into tough situations on our backs, we fought back. I'm very pleased with the way we competed."

Starting the match at 132, the Stars got started well right away when Trey Fuston won by pin.

After Kameron Mikesell won by forfeit, Mason Adams (145) and Evan Trent (152) followed with pins to make it 24-0.

The Stars had nine pins on the night.

"We are always looking to score points, both individually and team points," Mikesell said. "Whenever we have a chance to put the opponent on their back, we want to do that."

Maybe the biggest win for the Stars came at 160 pounds with WeBo's Andrew Manthey.

The WeBo sophomore found himself down 4-1 midway through the first period, but got a reversal and then found a way to pin Frankfort's Kevin Alanis to put the Stars up 30-0.

"I'm really proud of him," Mikesell said. "He came back this year and he's been pushing himself in the practice room. That showed and paid off tonight."

Trevor Weakley got a pin at 170 to make it 36-0, before Ethan Williams overcame a first-period deficit to win by fall at 182.

After a forfeit at 195 and a double forfeit at 220, Josh Dickey got the Stars back to their winning ways with a pin at 285.

Isaac Moore got a pin at 106 to make it 54-6, and after wins for Frankfort at 113 and 120, Ben Fortner finished the match off with a pin at 126 for the Stars.

"It's always nice to come out and wrestle another opponent instead of ourselves to see what we need to work on," Mikesell said. "I am proud of all the guys. We went out there, wrestled well and got some pins."

Western Boone hosts their duals on Saturday.

Facing all conference teams, Mikesell said it is a big opportunity to face some opponents they will see the rest of the year.

"It's huge for us," Mikesell said. "They are all conference opponents, and these matches will be huge come January with conference and then the sectional."
