Rodman Library hosts food program

ALLIANCE − Holly Bandy of the Ohio State University Extension’s College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Science will present “Know Your Food” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St.

Key points of the presentation will include health benefits, servings, and preparation and storage of food. Attendees can sample a healthy treat made from in-season produce following a cooking demonstration.

'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead’ at Mount Union

ALLIANCE − The Department of Performing Arts at the University of Mount Union will present “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” on Thursday through Sunday in the Gallaher Black Box Theatre in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

The Thursday through Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 and a matinee performance will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Order tickets, $10 for adults and $8 for seniors/veterans, at mountunion.edu/boxoffice or call 330-821-2565. You can also buy tickets at the box office from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, one week before the show. The box office will open for ticket sales one hour prior to the show's start.

Palette 2 Palate fundraiser Saturday

CANTON − Stark County Hunger Task Force will hold its eighth annual charity art auction, Palette 2 Palate, from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave. N.

Attendees can bid on donated works of art by local artists as well as silent and live auction items, and enjoy free hors d'oeuvres and desserts with a cash bar.

Canton Film Fest this week

CANTON − The Canton Film Fest will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N.

Tickets are $25 for all three days, or $10 per day. Students with valid student ID receive free admission at the door. Student IDs must be presented prior to entering. A complete schedule, along with tickets, is available at www.cantonpalacetheatre.org.

Speaking of Books author series

CANTON − Stark Library’s free 2022-23 Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series continues at 6:30 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, on the following dates:

  • Oct. 18: Tyler Merrit, author of “I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith and Being Black in America,” and an actor, comedian, activist and musician. He has also produced the viral YouTube videos “Before You Call the Cops” and “Walking While Black.”

  • Nov. 29: Nigella Lawson, internationally renowned food writer and TV cook will entertain with stories from her new book, “Cook, Eat, Repeat.”

  • Feb. 16: Danni Washington, self-described “educational mermaid” and the first Black woman to host her own science TV series. Her book, “Bold Women in Science,” tells the inspiring stories of 15 women who changed the course of science.

  • April 27: Dylan Dreyer, weather forecaster who co-hosts the third hour of NBC’s “Today” show, combines science and social-emotional learning in her new picture book, “Misty the Cloud.”

Monster Bash at McKinley Museum

CANTON − The McKinley Presidential Library and Museum’s Science Saturday Workshop will be a Monster Bash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Attendees can learn about Ohio cryptids, Frankenstein and vampires. There will be fun activities and crafts for all ages. This open house-style workshop will be held in the auditorium and is included in the price of admission to the museum.

Safety Center open house

JACKSON TWP. − Jackson Township’s annual Safety Center open house will be 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 9 at 7383 Fulton Drive NW.

Celiac support group to meet

JACKSON TWP. − The Stark County Celiac Support Group will meet at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Lakes, U.M.C., 5944 Fulton Drive.

Attendees will be sharing a baked potato bar and gluten-free desserts with members and guests. The event is free and the public is invited, but reservations are required.

MASSILLON − The Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will present The Gambler Returns – Ultimate Kenny Rogers Tribute from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 9.

History discussion group resumes meetings

MASSILLON − The Massillon Museum’s History Discussion Group will resume its monthly meetings this Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Moderator Chris Craft will lead the discussion about live performances and venues.

Participants can learn about the bandstand that hosted concerts in City Hall Park ― now the Massillon Museum’s front lawn. Entertainers often performed at the Opera House on South Erie Street; and the Grand Theatre across Lincoln Way from the museum’s current site was built as a vaudeville theater in 1915. In the mid-20th century, Stark residents often danced at the Meyers Lake Ballroom or at Moonlight Gardens.

Participants should bring their own memories and memorabilia ― ticket stubs, newspaper ads, programs, dance cards, autographed photos of performers ― to share.

The History Discussion Group meets in the Fred F. Silk Community Room in the museum’s lower level the first Tuesday of every month. The museum is fully accessible. Attendance is free and open to everyone; new participants are welcome and no reservations are necessary. Pastries and coffee are available for a donation. Free parking is available on adjacent streets and nearby city lots.

Program at library about raid on Harpers Ferry

MINERVA − The Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Drive, will host a presentation at 7 p.m. Monday about the raid on Harpers Ferry in October 1859. Paul Goebbel, local historical reenactor, will tell the stories of the 18 men who accompanied John Brown.

Apply for Christmas help

MASSILLON – Western Stark County families with children up to age 12 who need help with gifts and food during the Christmas holidays can sign up online Oct. 3-28 for The Salvation Army Massillon’s Christmas Assistance program.

The application is available at www.salvationarmyohio.org/massillon or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheSalvationArmyofMassillon. There is a Spanish version available online.

ZIP codes eligible for assistance at The Salvation Army Massillon are 44614, 44646, 44647, and 44648. A photo ID is required at pickup time. The Salvation Army Massillon partners with Toys for Tots. Distribution is Dec. 15-16.
