CANTON TWP. − A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother with a gun Friday afternoon, the Stark County sheriff's office said.

Paramedics transported the mother to Aultman Hospital, where she was treated for a "single gunshot wound" and injuries that were not life threatening, a sheriff's office statement.

The shooting took place around 2:37 p.m. in the 4100 block of Lincoln Street E, the sheriff's office said.

"This is an example as to why it is critical that firearms are properly stored inside the home," Stark County Sheriff George Maier said in a statement. "This incident very easily could have been tragic. Thankfully no lives were lost, this time."

The statement from Maier's office did not explain how the 3-year-old boy was able to access and fire the gun. It also did not disclose what type of gun the boy fired or if the deputies would file any criminal charges.

Sheriff's deputies and detectives along with paramedics from the Canton Township Fire Department responded to the home.

Anyone with more information about what happened is asked to call the sheriff's office at 330-430-3800 or the Anonymous Crime Tip Line at 330-451-3937.
