While the most recent glimpse at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from the D23 Expo event raised more questions than it answered, one Star Wars icon knows how it all ends, and reckons it's a winner.

John Williams, the composer behind some of the most memorable movie scores of all time, not least Star Wars, let slip a few words about the anticipated final instalment in the current trilogy.

Williams was leading a concert at the Hollywood Bowl over the weekend, playing excerpts of his scores from films like Jurassic Park, E.T., Amistad and, of course, Star Wars.

12 Monkeys series showrunner Terry Matalas was among those in the crowd, and caught on camera Williams introducing one number from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

He told the crowd: “JJ Abrams is directing a new film, and I agree he's doing a fantastic job.

“And I think, I won't say anything about it spoiling the ending, it'll just put you all away.

“I think you'll love it.”

Whether it will calm the fears of many Star Wars fans following the divisive The Last Jedi remains to be seen.

Looper director Rian Johnson took on the middle movie in the current trilogy, but it fell flat with some fans.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow was then meant to be directing the final movie, but parted ways after his vision failed to tally with that of Luscafilm boss Kathleen Kennedy.

J.J. Abrams was then drafted back in after making the first new movie, The Force Awakens, and is now working towards finishing the final chapter ahead of its Christmas release.

Starring Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Billie Lourd, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and Ian McDiarmid, it lands in the UK on 19 December.
