Star of the Day: Durfee hoop teams sweep Brockton; Case girls hoop wins sixth game

FALL RIVER — The Durfee boys basketball team returned to the hardwood floor on Tuesday for the first time in 12 days.

The Hilltoppers did not miss a beat.

Durfee remains unbeaten in the Southeast Conference after beating Brockton, 70-57, inside the Luke Urban Fieldhouse on the campus of B.M.C. Durfee High School.

Jeyden Espinal led the way for the Hilltoppers (5-1; 2-0 in SEC) with a team-high 15 points. Jevon Holley finished with 12 points in the win.

Ariel Pereira and Owen Nowacki each had a big game and finished in double figures with 10 points.

Durfee travels to New Bedford on Saturday.

Westport 80, Bristol-Plymouth 58

The undefeated Wildcats took care of business against league opponent Bristol-Plymouth.

Aidan Rock paved the way for Westport (8-0) with a game-high 22 points. Jayden Zuber had 13 points while Ben Poitras finished with 12 points.

Nine different players hit the scoring column for the Wildcats.

Westport hosts Greater New Bedford on Wednesday.

Somerset Berkley 59, Old Rochester 56

The Raiders defeated league opponent Old Rochester in a tight match on the road in Mattapoisett.

Ethan Dias netted a game-high 30 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for SB (4-4; 3-2 in South Coast Conference).

Colton Baptiste added 12 points and eight rebounds while Ethan Rebello finished with nine points.

Fairhaven 53, Joseph Case 24

The Cardinals lost their game against league opponent Fairhaven.

Landon Cayton had six points for Case (1-6; 0-5 in SCC).

The Cardinals host Wareham on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Durfee 49, Brockton 35

The Lady Hilltoppers improve to 5-3 after beating league opponent Brockton.

Landry Caron led Durfee with a team-high 15 points.

Mya Hayes-Paulette and Julia Hargraves each finished with 11 points.

Mackenzie Carreiro added seven points in the win.

Joesph Case 75, Fairhaven 49

Brooke Orton scored a career-high 34 points to help the Lady Cardinals past league opponent Fairhaven.

Orton also had four assists and four steals. Abigail Sirois finished with 17 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, and four steals for Case (6-1; 3-0 in SCC).

Jamie Moniz contributed nine points, eight assists, and seven steals

Bishop Stang 53, Cardinal Spellman 40

The Lady Spartans had a balanced scoring attack in their win over Cardinal Spellman.

Kate Carreau led Stang (6-2; 4-2 in CCL) with a team-high 20 points and five assists.

Bridget Markey chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Sophie Caldwell finished with 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Eleanor Senna had six points and three steals in the win.

The Spartans travel to Dartmouth on Friday.

Old Rochester 56, Somerset Berkley 29

The Lady Raiders dropped a league game to Old Rochester.

Allie Powers led SB (4-4) with a team-high 10 points. Gabriella Nugent finished with eight points.

BOYS SWIMMING

Bridgewater-Raynham 97, Durfee 77

The Hilltoppers dropped their league opener against Bridgewater-Raynham.

Yasin Mahmoud was the lone double winner for Durfee (3-3; 0-1 in SEC), placing first in the 200 free (2:26.19) and 500 free (6:41.28).

Other first place finishers were Cooper Long (100 free) and Benjamin Hankerson (50 free). Hankerson and Long were joined by Omar Mahmoud and Mack Reed to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:53.27.

Thomas Hargis, Forrest Malo, Tim Archambault, and Michael Harrington each had strong performances.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Bridgewater-Raynham 105, Durfee 78

The Lady Hilltoppers lost their opening league meet to Bridgewater-Raynham.

Aimee Tiebout won the 200 IM for Durfee (4-2; 0-1 in SEC) with a time of 2:43.78. Bruna Lobo took first in the 500 free with a personal-best time of 7:39.94. Other winners include Abigail Long (100 free) and Rachael Silva (1-meter dive).

Impressive performances were turned in by Emma McDonnell, Abigail Saunders, Leah Rodriguez, and Madison Ferreira.
