'Stangs fall in Reno opener; Rogues miss sweep

Jul. 2—RENO, Nev. — Tanner Douglas belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Medford Mustangs an early spark Friday in the first game of the three-day Reno Tournament.

But four Mustang errors in the first five innings led to four unearned runs for the Diablo Valley Oaks, which came away with a 9-5 victory at Reno High School.

After Diablo Valley tallied four runs in the top of the third inning and tacked on another in the fourth to push its lead to 8-2, the Mustangs (14-4) responded with three runs on five singles and a walk in the fifth but it was all the Medford offense was able to generate.

Douglas' first-inning deep shot sent home Cameron Sewell, who had reached base with a double. Sewell, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, also pitched the first five innings for the Mustangs and allowed eight runs although only four were earned. He also struck out four.

Cody Borraggine went 2-for-4 and scored once for the Mustangs, who will try to rebound against the Yuba City Stripers at 2 p.m. Saturday before taking on the Reno Knights at 4:30 p.m.
