The Standard 10: Terrence Smith

Aug. 14—What he's done

Smith earned Region 5-AAAA Offensive Player of the Year honors in his first season at quarterback after passing for 524 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 736 yards and nine more scores to lead the T-Breds to a region title.

And he wasn't supposed to play quarterback until the absolute last minute.

Why he's here

He's here because he's just that kind of athlete. Smith was going to be the T-Breds' top target at wide receiver until right before the season opener against Silver Bluff when he was called into action.

He took over the starting role and suffered a tough loss, then guided the offense as the T-Breds reeled off an eight-game winning streak that took them into the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Now he starts out the season with a full year at quarterback under his belt.

What to expect

Expect him to show what he learned with a full season — and full offseason — of experience at the quarterback position. Expect that to mean more opportunities for him to throw the ball, and expect opposing defenses to have to play him a lot more carefully.

Expect him to still show off his speed and elusiveness to turn in those highlight-reel runs, like the three he scored against Wilson in the first round of the playoffs. And expect he and Jevon Edwards to form one of the most dangerous backfields in the state.

And finally, expect him to continue to prove that he's not an athlete playing quarterback — he is a starting quarterback.
