The Standard 10: DJ Curry

Aug. 14—What he's done

Curry earned All Region 5-AAAA and Class AAAA All-State recognition last year after rushing for 1,188 yards and 15 touchdown on 193 carries.

He showed throughout the season that it was going to take more than just the first defender — and in many cases, the second and third — to bring him down once the ball was in his hands.

Why he's here

He's here because he's a physical power back in an offense that wants to establish the run early in games. His power can often make up for a missed assignment by an offensive lineman or tight end, because he typically runs through the initial contact.

He's also here because of his skill and willingness as a blocker. He takes pride in that ability, and that will help the Yellow Jackets when they run jet sweeps or quarterback keepers.

What to expect

Expect him to spend another season leaving opposing defenders needing a little extra time in the ice bath after facing North Augusta. An offense with so many weapons and so much explosive playmaking ability means defenses can't always devote an extra body or two to stop the run — and expect him to punish them when they don't.

Actually, expect him to punish them when they do, too. And expect defenders to opt not to include clips of their piggyback rides on his back when they're putting together their highlight reels.
