A first look at Colin Firth in the new drama series adaptation of true crime documentary The Staircase has been unveiled.

The limited HBO Max series will see the Oscar winner play the role of Michael Peterson, appearing alongside Toni Collette, who plays Michael's wife Kathleen Peterson, with a spring premiere date expected.

Peterson was convicted in 2003 of murdering his wife after she was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in their home, though the conviction was reduced to voluntary manslaughter in 2017.

"This has been a project I have been working on in one way or another since 2008," Antonio Campos, who is executive producing alongside American Crime Story's Maggie Cohn and directing a few episodes, previously said.

"It's been a long and winding road, but well worth the wait to be able to find partners like HBO Max, Annapurna, co-showrunner Maggie Cohn and the incredible Colin Firth to dramatise such a complex true-life story."

The Staircase's adaptation has been in the pipeline for a number of years, with Harrison Ford reportedly attached at one point to play the role of Michael Peterson.

The original documentary series premiered back in 2004, before receiving a spate of new interest when it was added on Netflix in 2018 with three new episodes on top of the existing 10.

The Staircase will stream on HBO Max in the US. A UK air date is yet to be confirmed.
