Treasure Coast schools cancel classes Wednesday, Thursday as Hurricane Ian approaches

All Treasure Coast school districts will close Wednesday and Thursday in advance of Hurricane Ian.

Martin County Schools announced its closings Tuesday, soon after Indian River and St. Lucie school districts canceled classes. School employees will prepare schools and district facilities by placing shutters on buildings and removing debris that could become projectiles, officials said in a prepared statement.

The closings and cancelations include extracurricular activities, athletic events and other events. School employees should not report to work on these days.

Most activities and events scheduled for Tuesday will continue as planned. St. Lucie Schools canceled the College Fair scheduled Tuesday at the Fenn Center and will be rescheduled.

Indian River State College has canceled classes and is closing the campus at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Classes are canceled Wednesday.

No openings of emergency storm shelters have been announced at this time.
