St. Brendan shines at volleyball event. Plus football, sailing, Broward cross-country and more

The St. Brendan girls’ volleyball team went 4-1 to earn the Silver Championship at the Lake Howell Tournament in Winter Park.

The Sabres (9-2) defeated Mater Lakes Academy, Orangewood Christian-Maitland, Ferguson and Gulf Coast-Naples. Their lone loss was to Lake Brantley-Altamonte Springs in a third-set tiebreaker.

Cross-country

In a co-ed cross-country meet at Markham Park in Sunrise, senior Anika Kaufman of Cypress Bay was first for girls and 14th overall in 20 minutes 25.7 seconds. Coral Springs Charter senior Ashlee Diaz was second (25th overall) in 22:58.1. Cypress Bay sophomore Callie McKinney was third (27th overall) in 23:06.5, and senior Kennedy Lerner of Cooper City fourth (30th overall) in 23:18.9.

Cypress Bay’s boys swept the top 5 spots with junior Ethan Sawyer first (19:21.8), junior Blake Lorenzo and senior Dante Thompson second (19:22), sophomore Quinn Sweet fourth (19:37) and senior Mattias Perez fifth (19:37.6). Cooper City senior Ayman Salim was sixth in 19:48.1, and Coral Springs Charter junior Eli Groothuis was eighth in 20:15.3.

More cross-country

In another cross-country race at Markham Park, Western’s girls and Pembroke Pines Charter’s boys won respective divisions. The Wildcats placed first of seven girls’ teams, and the Jaguars first of eight boys’ teams.

Sailing

The Ransom Everglades sailing team was well represented at the South Atlantic High School Singlehanded (Laser boat) Championships in Jacksonville.

The Raiders sent six sailors to this district championship, which is a qualifier for the high school singlehanded national championships next month. Ransom Everglades sophomore Griggs Diemar won the 11-race regatta and senior team captain Jackson McAliley finished second, both qualifying for the Cressy National Championships at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Sixty-three sailors, representing high schools from as far north as South Carolina and south as Puerto Rico, competed in Jacksonville.

Football

St. Brendan 27, Mater Academy Charter 24: In an exciting battle, the Sabres evened their record to 2-2. Trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, St. Brendan’s Eric Youman scored on the ensuing kickoff, 85 yards, and Marco Netto added the PAT. Down 17-7 in the third quarter, St. Brendan’s Gabriel Granados scored on an 8-yard TD pass from Julian Fresen. In the fourth quarter, the Sabres took their first lead when Youman scored on a 24-yard TD pass from Fresen. Jacob Corredera converted the PAT. After Mater regained the lead, St. Brendan scored the winner on a Widley Jean Francois 4-yard TD run with Corredera on the PAT.

Fresen finished 21-of-26 passing for 268 yds and 2 TDs. Youman caught 8 passes for 84 yards and 1 TD, and Granados caught 7 passes for 60 yards and 1 TD. Jacari Lannigan caught a 36-yd pass. Bernard Olivia made 4 tackles with 7 assists, 1 TFL and 1 sack, and Kevin Torrez had 5 tackles and 1 INT. Pablo Pena had 2 tackles with 6 assists and 1 fum rec, and Anthony Gray made 2 tackles with 2 assists, 1 TFL and 1 sack. Luis Lugo added 3 tackles, 2 assists, 1 fum rec and 2 INT, and Terrell Franklin 2 tackles, 2 assists, 1 INT.
