Sports shorts: Optimist athletes, Hillcrest event winners

May 15—Optimist Club's weekly athletes

Chandlar Rott, Maddy Orr, Brice Foster and Katie Merchant were named Jamestown Optimist Club Athletes of the Week.

Rott, a senior on the JHS boys track and field team, placed second in 3,200 meters at the Twilight Invitational on Friday in Bismarck, qualifying for state in 10 minutes, 4.21 seconds. He was also a member of the Jays' first-place 4x800 relay team.

Orr, a junior on the Blue Jay girls track and field team, ran on the winning, and state-qualifying, 4x800 team at the Twilight Invite.

Foster, a senior on the Jimmies baseball team from Lynnwood, Washington, collected seven hits in 14 at-bats in leading the Jimmies to the championship game of the Doane Bracket of the GPAC Tourney. Foster scored five times and drove in three runs, and also recorded the final out from the pitcher's mound in a 9-5 victory over Mount Marty.

Merchant, a sophomore on the Jimmie softball team from South Haven, Minnesota, pitched 12 innings and gave up one run with five strikeouts and no walks in the Midland Bracket of the GPAC tourney. In a win over Midland, Merchant allowed only one hit and no runs in 6 innings.

Hillcrest ladies' day winners

The event winners for ladies' day held May 11, 2021, at Hillcrest Golf Course were as follows:

Jessica Pfau, closest third shot on hole 6 (4 inches).

Courtney Cook, closest to pin on hole 8 (10 feet, 1 inch).

Jackie Trautman, longest putt on hole 11 (14-6).

Theresa Haag, mystery game winner: most pars (7).

Rema Mogck, door prize.

The event winners for men's day held May 13, 2021, at Hillcrest Golf Course were as follows:

Mark Lundgren, closest to pin on hole 7 (7 feet, 5 inches).

Jeff Carlson, closest to pin on hole 8 (14-1).

Bubba Miller, closest to pin on hole 15 (41-6).

Ernie Williams, closest to pin on hole 17 (9-6).

Roger Fisher, closest second shot on hole 2 (3-3).

Jeff Carlson, longest putt on hole 3 (6-4).
