Sport Shorts: Petersen gets AOW honors for Blue Jays

Sep. 23—Hunter Petersen, a senior right-side hitter for the Jamestown High School volleyball team, collected Jamestown Optimist Club's Athlete of the Week accolades this week.

Petersen recorded 41 kills, three blocks and eight digs in the Jays' last three matches. The Blue Jays went 2-1 last week at Jerry Meyer Arena, collecting wins against Mandan and Watford City and falling against Bismarck Century.

Cullen Flieth was the top Blue Jay finisher at the Blue-White Invite held in Valley City on Saturday. By covering the 5000-meter course in 18 minutes, 11 seconds. Cullen placed 20th out of 115 varsity runners. The Jays finished seventh out of 20 competing teams.

Diaz helps UJ women's soccer team stay undefeated

Cassandra Diaz scored three goals in the Jimmies' tilt with Morningside Sept. 18. The Jimmies topped the Mustangs 4-2 in the conference match-up to improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).

Micah Madyun was a key performer in the Jimmies' improbable comeback 32-28 win at Hastings on Sept. 18. For the game, Madyun caught 9 passes for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns, including his 80-yard game-winning TD catch with only 42 seconds remaining in the contest.
