The past few years we’ve seen kids go crazy for cuddly toys they can take care of, and toys that contain some kind of surprise when unboxed. Spin Master’s Hatchimals were the perfect combination of these two ideas, where a kid would have to care for an egg to get it to hatch into some unknown creature.
Now the company is taking the concept even further this season with its new toy, Peek-a-Roo. Instead of taking care of an egg, kids will now be responsible for its mama — how the baby turns out really depends on how good of a grandparent your child is. Peek-A-Roo will be available this fall for $60 each (the same price as a Hatchimal) from major retailers including Target, Walmart and Amazon.
The name calls to mind a kangaroo, and the baby will live in a pouch on the mother’s belly, just like a real marsupial. But the first animal available is called “Panda Roo,” and yes, she looks like a panda. Specifically a purple panda with large blue eyes and spots of pink on her feet and ears. The tiny baby looks a lot like its mama, but what color it will be is a complete surprise until it pops out for the first time — either blue, pink or purple.
The mama has touch sensors on her head, hands and feet, and will react to a child squeezing or petting the toy. The mama also interacts with her baby, and a happy mom means a happy child. The sensors on the mother toy will react to the presence of the baby panda either in or out of the pouch; they can even play little games like peek-a-boo together. The pouch is mechanical, and that’s how the child moves — it’ll push the baby up and down, or in and out to simulate bouncing and dancing. (The tiny baby panda itself has no moving parts.) There are over 150 different sounds and actions the pair can make, including songs, dances and even cuddles.
