Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have lived in America (after a short stint in Canada) for close to nine months now and yesterday saw them celebrate their first Thanksgiving in the States as a family, along with their one-year-old son, Archie. The royals have made the town of Montecito, about an hour or so outside of LA, their new base and have been busy homemaking over the past few months.

A source close to the family has shed some light on how they spent the American holiday, which is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, and it sounds as though they kept things simple, low-key and personal. "They are going to have a quiet dinner at home and are looking forward to celebrating their first American Thanksgiving in the States as a family," the insider shared.

They continued on to add that Meghan and Harry would be making use of some very local produce too – namely, vegetables from their own garden. "They plan to enjoy a homecooked meal with traditional Thanksgiving dishes, including recipes made with fresh vegetables from their garden." A spokesperson from Archewell, Meghan and Harry's charity, confirmed to Cosmopolitan that this source was indeed reliable.

Typical Thanksgiving dishes include roast turkey, mashed potato, corn and pumpkin pie. We wonder who was given cranberry sauce duty in their house?

Recently, the couple also made the brave decision to share, through a personal essay written by Meghan, that they experienced a miscarriage this summer. In her piece, the Duchess of Sussex said that given we're all living through a truly challenging and divisive time – with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the vital work of the Black Lives Matter movement coming to the forefront – we all need to start with something as simple as opening up a caring conversation.

In sharing her own painful experience, Meghan has no doubt helped countless other families who are dealing with a similar sort of grief – much in the way that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend also did after sharing the sad news that they lost their baby boy, Jack, part way through Chrissy's pregnancy.

We hope that Harry, Meghan and Archie enjoyed their first Thanksgiving together in the United States and had a much deserved day of peace and togetherness. Fingers crossed we'll be able to see the family over in the UK some time next year, COVID-permitting.
