Special election for Richland 1 school board is Tuesday. Here’s what to know
Voters in Richland 1 will decide on Tuesday who fills an open seat on the Richland 1 school board.
Three candidates are seeking Yolanda Anderson’s old seat on the school board. Anderson resigned Aug. 2 when she moved out of the school district. The winner will serve the remainder of Anderson’s term through the end of next year.
Hamilton Jacobs, Robert Lominack and Jim Manning are running for the district-wide seat. Voters from north of Columbia to Lower Richland are eligible to vote in the race.
Manning is seeking the seat after stepping down last year from on Richland County Council after serving for 20 years. Lominack is a former teacher at Dreher High School who now heads an education non-profit. Jacobs is a real estate agent and also heads a mentorship program for underserved youth.
The race was shaken up just one week before Election Day when a fourth candidate, professor Leslie Harvel, dropped out of the race, citing upcoming work commitments that will take her out of the country.
Another candidate who initially filed to run in Richland 1, financial analyst Kim La, dropped out before filing closed in August to focus instead on running for a full term on the board in 2022.

Richland 1 school board candidates give plans for fighting inequity, keeping teachers
Some poling locations are being combined for Tuesday’s special election.
▪ Columbia wards 1 and 33 are being combined at Martin Luther King Park, 2300 Greene St.
▪ Blythewood 1 and 3 are combined at Blythewood Park, 126 Boney Road.
▪ Keels 2, Meadowlake and Valley State Park will all vote at Meadowlake Park, 600 Beckman Road.
▪ Riverside and St. Andrews are combined at St. Andrews Middle School, 1231 Bluefield Drive.
