Spartan girls go 3-0 against ISC schools, boys finish 2-1 during week: Wierson, Houge lead C-M girls

The Collins-Maxwell girls rolled to three victories and the Spartan boys defeated Clarksville and Valley Lutheran and fell to Meskwaki last week in three basketball doubleheaders against Iowa Star Conference foes.

The Collins-Maxwell girls defeated Clarksville (50-40) Saturday in Maxwell, Meskwaki (55-49) Friday in Maxwell and Valley Lutheran (89-7) Dec. 7 in Cedar Falls to improve to 4-2 on the season. The victories over Meskwaki and Valley Lutheran put the Spartans at 2-1 in ISC South Division play.

The Spartan boys rolled past Clarksville (79-36) and Valley Lutheran (57-36) and suffered a 67-60 loss to Meskwaki. Collins-Maxwell improved to 2-2 overall and went to 1-2 in the ISC South.

Here is what we learned from the three Spartan basketball doubleheaders of the week:

Houge, Wierson lead girls in close wins

Alexis Houge and Chloe Wierson came up big for the Spartan girls in the victories over Clarksville and Meskwaki.

Houge went for 13 points, five rebounds and four steals in the win over Clarksville. Wierson posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

In the win over Meskwaki Houge went off for 26 points, nine rebounds and three assists and steals apiece. Wierson tallied another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Erica Houge added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists and steals apiece against Clarksville. She also had, eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals versus Meskwaki.

Girls decimate Valley Lutheran

The Collins-Maxwell girls made short work of Valley Lutheran. The Spartans shot 60 % from the field, posted a huge 30-6 rebounding advantage and forced 28 turnovers.

Erica Houge had 23 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals in the win. Wierson went for 22 points on 10 of 11 shooting and she also pulled down seven rebounds.

Alexis Houge chipped in 11 points and nine steals and Kenzi Wierson added 13 points and six steals.

Rebounding is key for C-M boys

The Collins-Maxwell boys dominated the glass in their victories over Valley Lutheran and Clarksville.

The Spartans outrebounded Valley Lutheran, 36-17. They pulled down 50 rebounds against Clarksville, including 18 offensive boards.

Weston Kahler had eight rebounds and Austin Kepple six in the win over Valley Lutheran. Kahler was all over the glass against Clarksville, pulling down 19 boards.

Boys have great balance in victories

In the victory over Valley Lutheran Jace Huntrods had 21 points and five steals and Luke Huntrods 14 points, five rebounds and three assists and steals apiece. Kahler added seven assists and three steals to his strong rebounding and Kepple finished with nine points.

Kahler backed up his huge rebounding night against Clarksville with 10 points, six assists and three steals. Luke Huntrods added 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals, Jace Huntrods scored 13 points and Dane Beattie netted 16 points off the bench.

Slow start costs boys against Meskwaki

Collins-Maxwell was slow out of the gate during its loss to Meskwaki.

The Spartans were outscored 28-16 in the second quarter. They trailed 44-31 at the half.

Collins-Maxwell was also at a big disadvantage at the foul line. The Spartans only made 1 of 6 free throws and Meskwaki was 21 of 28 at the charity stripe.

Luke Huntrods did his best to keep the Spartans close with 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Jace Huntrods added 13 points and Kahler nine points, six rebounds and three steals.

Larnell Bear went for 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Wyatt Kapayou 24 points and 12 rebounds for Meskwaki.
