Southwestern men's basketball roundup: Spartans snap three-game losing streak

Mar. 2—Southwestern 94, North Iowa Area 71

Southwestern (6-6) got back on track with its second consecutive win, taking down North Iowa Area (1-12) Saturday, 94-71.

The Spartans led 43-22 after the first half and continued to roll with 51 points in the second half. Southwestern shot 17-for-33 from beyond the arc, 52%, and 32-for-57 from the field, 56%.

SWCC had four players in double-digit scoring. Joe Kearney led the team in scoring with 17 points to go with two blocks and two steals. Demarious Carey scored 11 points with four assists, and Nate Duckworth and Donzell Johnson each scored 10 points.

Southwestern 86, Northeast 73

CALMAR — Southwestern knocked off Northeast (3-10) Tuesday, Feb. 23 86-73 to snap a three-game losing streak.

Northeast took a lead in the first half, outscoring Southwestern 41-36, but the Spartans rallied back in the second half, 50-32. In the second half, SWCC went on a 16-2 run over a four-minute stretch to seal the win.

Northeast turned the ball over nine times in the second half. The Hawks totaled 19 in the game. Five Spartans scored double-digits, with Johnson's 19 points leading the way.

Iowa Lakes 90, Southwestern 87

Southwestern came up just shy of its fifth ranked win Saturday, Feb. 20 with a 90-87 loss to NJCAA Div. 2 No. 6 Iowa Lakes (9-3).

After the first half of play, Southwestern held a 42-36 lead over Iowa Lakes. The Lakers' offense came out hot from deep in the second half, knocking down 9 of 11 3-pointers. Iowa Lakes outscored SWCC 54-45 as the Spartans went 15-for-31 from the field and gave up seven turnovers in the half.

Johnson scored 23 points.

Southeastern 66, Southwestern 58

WEST BURLINGTON — Southwestern fell to Southeastern (9-4) 66-58 Wednesday, Feb. 18.

A tight, low-scoring game through the first half, SWCC held a one-point advantage, entering the break up 33-32. In the second half, Southeastern outscored the Spartans 34-25 to take the win.

Four players scored double-digits for the Spartans. Johnson scored a game-high 19 points with two rebounds and two assists. James Kelley scored 11 points with eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block

Ellsworth 73, Southwestern 55

Southwestern's 73-55 loss to Ellsworth (1-11) Saturday, Feb. 13 started a three-game losing streak.

The Spartans trailed 30-24 after the first half, but Ellsworth extended its lead with 43 points in the second half, knocking down 14 of 30 threes and 9 of 16 in the second half. Ellsworth's leading scorer, Adam Jackson, put up 27 of his game-high 39 points in the second half.

Duckworth had 12 points, and Kelley finished with 11 of his own. Emmanuel Nwaneri grabbed 10 rebounds and scored eight points off the bench.
