Southington football defeats Glastonbury 28-7 for its second win

Last week, Southington High football coach Mike Drury didn’t quite make it to his team’s opening game against Maloney.

Drury was at the school but he was felled by a stomach virus and spent the game on the floor of his office watching his team play Maloney on his phone.

Friday night Drury was back, and his Southington team went to 2-0 after defeating Glastonbury, 28-7.

“This is a lot better,” he said. “I enjoyed this more.”

Senior Jack Barnum, in his first year as quarterback, completed 9 of 20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns for Southington. In the first half he was 8 for 13. Evan Anderson caught two of his touchdown passes.

Glastonbury dropped to 0-2.

Last week Southington beat Maloney on a 42-yard touchdown pass by Barnum with a little over a minute left.

“He’s tremendously composed,” Drury said of Barnum.

Lincoln Cardillo led the Blue Knights in rushing with 124 yards n 10 carries, including a 64-yard run in the fourth quarter. He also scored the Blue Knights’ final touchdown on a 5-yard run early in the fourth when Glastonbury quarterback Drew Curto fumbled while being sacked and Cardillo got the ball and ran into the end zone.

“I think we played great today,” Southington senior defensive lineman Jackson Rusiecki said. “I liked how we played. We worked together better.”

Javon Thomas also scored a touchdown and had 13 carries for 59 yards.

“I think we started to play cleaner this week in some of the stuff we were doing, especially the run game,” Drury said.

Southington got on the board first with a 5-yard touchdown run by Thomas with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Barnum’s kick gave Southington a 7-0 lead.

The Blue Knights made it 14-0 when Barnum hit Anderson with an 11-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. On the drive, on fourth-and-3, Barnum held onto the ball and ran 38 yards to Glastonbury’s 10. Southington scored three plays later.

Curto had a big play with 7:55 left in the first half, a 63-yard pass to Jayden Sgro to get to the Southington 16. Three plays later, the Guardians got on the scoreboard when Curto hit Jack Hennessy with an 11-yard touchdown pass and Glastonbury trailed 14-7.

Barnum and Anderson connected again on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 2:18 left in the first half and Southington led 21-7.

With 38 seconds left, Glastonbury lost the ball and Southington recovered the fumble on the Guardians’ 28. Barnum attempted a 48 yard field goal but it went wide right and the first half was over.
