How South Point boys basketball's 'Revenge Tour' rolled on with dominant win at Crest

BOILING SPRINGS — Suddenly, things seem to be turning in favor of the South Point boys basketball team.

Seemingly out of contention after three losses early in Big South 3A play, the Red Raiders thrust themselves back into the league title race Tuesday night with a 79-64 win at Crest.

In a Jan. 6 overtime loss, South Point (18-3, 8-3 Big South 3A) watched an 11-point lead wilt in the game’s final minutes due to Crest’s full-court press. Ahead by five after three quarters Tuesday, the Red Raiders scored 26 points in the fourth to gain the separation necessary to earn their sixth consecutive win.

“It’s the fourth or fifth game lately where we’ve been up two or down two at halftime. It’s been our M.O. lately, it seems,” said South Point coach Kody Kubbs. “But we just keep delivering body blows; our guys are playing with a lot of confidence, not just in their own abilities but in each other's. You saw that tonight with guys that had six, seven eight assists, they are just trusting each other offensively.”

Three Red Raiders finished in double-figure scoring. Dylan Bradley led the way, the 6-foot-3 freshman hitting six 3-pointers on his way to 24 points.

Jaquis Rumph scored 14 points, and Greyson Kines earned a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Sean Gore had eight points and nine assists, while Sullivan Absher had 17 rebounds.

Without the services of coach Brad LeVine and top scorer A.J. Adams, Crest (15-5, 8-3) fell to its third loss in four games. Tylik Briscoe had 19 points and Ny’Tavious Huskey 10.

The teams are tied for second in Big South 3A with 8-3 records. Both are a game behind Kings Mountain (12-8, 9-2), which took over first place following a 67-60 win over Forestview.

South Point has an opportunity to create a tie atop the league Friday when Kings Mountain visits Belmont. A win would also complete the Red Raiders' “Revenge Tour” by avenging losses to Hunter Huss, Crest and Kings Mountain during a three-game stretch.

“There’s a lot of talent and really good athletes in this conference, so you have to bring it every night,” Kubbs said. “You don’t have any gimmes on the schedule. You have to be prepared every night for a dogfight. Hopefully our guys will be ready and enjoy this moment.”
