South Carolina football suspends three freshman players; Monteque Rhames facing two charges

COLUMBIA — Three freshman South Carolina football players have been suspended from the team, the university announced in a release Friday.

One of the players — edge rusher Monteque Rhames II — was detained after allegedly carrying weapons on campus and obstructing justice, according to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center online records reviewed by The Greenville News.

The length of the suspensions is unknown.

No reason was given in the university release for the suspensions, but Rhames, a Sumter native, was detained in Columbia after "carrying weapons on school property and obstructing justice."

The Richland County Detention Center database states Rhames was booked at midnight Friday. A personal recognizance bond was set at $10,000, records show.

The other suspended players are freshman safety Cameron Upshaw and redshirt freshman defensive back Anthony Rose. Rhames and Upshaw enrolled early at South Carolina after signing with the Gamecocks' 2023 class. Rose enrolled at South Carolina in January 2022.

Rhames, 18, was a four-star prospect and the No. 5 prospect in South Carolina. He enrolled in January with Upshaw, a Perry, Florida, native and three-star prospect.

Rose, 20, is a Miami native who was four-star prospect coming out of high school. He did not appear in any games for the Gamecocks in 2022.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
