South Brunswick mourns 'community caretaker' Manny Mulero

SOUTH BRUNSWICK - A longtime community volunteer is being fondly remembered for his devotion to the community.

Manny Mulero died Sunday after a brief illness.

"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of longtime EMS volunteer and community caretaker Manny Mulero," the South Brunswick Police Department said in an Instagram post.

"Manny spent over 32 years as an EMT for the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad. He was a teacher with the New York City School system before his retirement. In addition to MJFAS he was also an EMT for NYC," The post said.

"In retirement he continued to give back serving for five years as a crossing guard with the police department," the post states adding that last year during the COVID-19 pandemic Mulero coordinated fit testing to ensure all township police officers had the proper masks while battling the pandemic.

"He was always giving back. His bright smile and easy going personality could calm any situation. He will be missed," Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said.

Mulero, a former Brooklyn resident, received his bachelor degree from City University of New York and his masters in in elementary education from Hunter College, according to his LinkedIn page.

He taught third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade in New York City for about 24 years before retiring. He also served as an EMT in New York, his LinkedIn page states.

Mulero's funeral arrangements are under the direction of M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road at New Road in the Monmouth Junction section of the township. The viewing is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10 at the funeral home. The funeral service and burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Cemetery, 840 Cranbury South River Road, Jamesburg.
