Tulane is expected to hire former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long to be the school’s next offensive coordinator, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports. A deal is expected to be worked out in the upcoming days.

Long is currently working as an analyst at Tennessee after he mutually parted ways with the Fighting Irish following the 2019 season. Notre Dame went 33-6 over the three seasons that Long served as the offensive coordinator.

The Irish reached the College Football Playoff in 2018 with Long calling plays, and he’s credited with playing a large role in turning around Notre Dame’s offense as he arrived the season after the team went 4-8. Long was a Broyles Award finalist in 2018.

The transition from departing Tulane offensive coordinator Will Hall to Long makes sense for both Long and Tulane. Long was college roommates at North Alabama with Hall, who took the head coaching job at Southern Miss earlier this week.

Both Long and Hall run similar styles of wide-open, tempo-based offense. The offense is pro-style but runs at high tempo and is built to highlight playmakers. The transition to Long is attractive to Tulane coach Willie Fritz because it afforded the Green Wave some continuity on offense with promising freshman quarterback Michael Pratt (21 total TDs) returning next season.

Pratt’s moxie, release and ability to see the field are attractive to Long, who has been associated with explosive offenses for much of his career. He’s a protégé of Florida State coach Mike Norvell, working with him at Arizona State and serving as Memphis’ offensive coordinator under Norvell in 2016.

That time at Memphis gives Long some familiarity with the American Athletic Conference, where wide-open offenses have often been the hallmark of the league’s top teams.
