Sony is Creating a Movie About a K-Pop Girl Group That Hunts Demons
A K-pop girl group that slays evil spirits is currently in development at Sony Animation. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, “K-Pop: Demon Hunters” pays tribute to Kang's "Korean roots and her die-hard love of K-Pop." The animated musical, described as an action-adventure, will tell the story of world-renowned K-pop artists who struggle to balance a music career with their secret identities as demon hunters. The movie will be set against “a colorful backdrop of fashion, food, style and music,” according to Variety. “Having been a fan of the genre since its beginnings in the ’90s, this film is my love letter to K-Pop and my Korean roots. It encompasses and celebrates everything K-Pop is -- it’s the film I would want to see as a lifelong fan and I hope the millions of K-Pop fans out there in the world will feel the same,” Kang, whose credits include “The Lego Ninjago Movie," told the media company.

Appelhans joined the project because he has always wanted to work on a movie about the power of music to unite, bring joy and build community. “K-Pop is the greatest embodiment of this in our lifetime, and we’re really excited to honor and showcase that through the lens of animation," he told Variety. Aron Warner (“Shrek”) will join Kang and Appelhans as the movie's producer. Hannah McMechan and Danya Jimenez will write the script. The movie will also have Mingjue Helen Chen as its production designer and Ami Thompson as its art director. Both Chen and Thompson worked on "Raya and the Last Dragon." A release date has yet to be announced. In the meantime, Sony has "Hotel Transylvania 4" and the untitled "Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse" sequel slated for 2021 and 2022, Collider noted.
